Securing Your Belongings When Travelling

December 31st, 2009

For many, one of the worst things that can happen while traveling is having your belongings lost or stolen. Trying to maintain a security-conscious mindset is one of the most effective ways to minimize potential risks. Following some common steps, and training yourself to carry them out instinctively will help keep your travels free of the expense and hassle of replacing missing items.

First and foremost, your belongings are only as secure as you are willing to keep them. If you are careless, or don’t follow all the reasonable steps you should, a certain amount of risk creeps in. Nothing you can do will 100% guarantee any item is secure. Keep this in mind when packing for the trip. Consider whether you can afford to lose any item you pack, both financially and emotionally. Think about what can easily be bought at your destination so that you can leave more behind. Before you leave, look into an appropriate amount of insurance. If you are traveling to a foreign country, especially one that is known for pickpockets and theft, get as much insurance as you can afford. It is worth the relief when something goes wrong. Make several copies of anything that has information on it, like a passport or a vaccination certificate. Leave a copy at home and distribute several copies amongst your luggage.

During your travels you need to constantly be aware of yourself and your possessions. Don’t let your bags go out of sight unless it is absolutely unavoidable. Try and minimize the time you spend physically carrying your luggage around with you. If you are encumbered with a heavy suitcase, you are less likely to give pursuit if someone snatches your wallet or purse, so make sure these items are very close to you and, if possible, hidden out of sight. Make sure you always check any seats you have used for anything you may have dropped or forgotten. Though this advice sounds obvious, maintaining an automatic awareness of your personal security is something that has to be practiced over time until it becomes almost subconscious.

You are at your most vulnerable when out in crowded places. Sizeable amounts of money, passports, or any other valuables should be kept underneath your clothing in a money belt or some other zippered pouch that isn’t your main pocket. Any money you think you’ll need during the day should be kept in a separate front pocket. You can top this up in private places to hide your money belt from view. If you are going to be carrying any bags with you, try and ’slashproof’ them by running wire or mesh through the places that would likely be cut. Additionally, the less you show off in public the less likely you are to be a target, so keep electronics, expensive-looking bags, and bulky items hidden as much as possible. Consider getting a scuffed-up rucksack specifically for city travel. Remember, anything that makes you stand out as a tourist marks you as a target for thieves.

Practice these steps in the weeks leading up to your trip so that they become more automatic. As always, good preparation and good advice are the cornerstones to any enjoyable travel experience. There are many more extensive guides on security and safety abroad on the web, and more information can be obtained from the tourist board of your destination.

5 Signs You Need an All-Inclusive Caribbean Vacation

December 7th, 2009

All-inclusive Caribbean vacations are always a popular choice for tourists. With an all-inclusive Caribbean travel package, you get to stay at an all-inclusive resort where your room or suite, food, snacks, drinks, tips, and some forms of onsite entertainment are included. Most importantly, you get to vacation in the beautiful, warm, sunny, and tropical Caribbean. While anyone can and should visit the Caribbean, here are five signs you should plan an all-inclusive trip right now:

You Have Never Been: The Caribbean is one of those vacation destinations that everyone should visit at least once in your lifetime. Why? It is an experience you will never forget. Unlike the vacations back home where you typically stay at a hotel and get a roof over your head, you get to stay at an all-inclusive resort. At this resort you should find multiple eateries and the cost of your food was already included in with your stay! As for activities, you will have a handful of land and water based activities. These do vary by resort, but you are likely to find snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, tennis, fitness rooms, and more. Best yet is that many resorts list these activities as inclusions, mean you don’t pay extra. Not only do you get the best vacation ever but it comes with no stress and no hassle!

Relationship: Whether you are married or have a boyfriend or a girlfriend, we all end up at different points in our relationships. An all-inclusive Caribbean vacation is perfect for each point. Just got married or want to get married? How about an all-inclusive Caribbean honeymoon or even a destination wedding? Celebrating an anniversary or just want to plan a romantic getaway? The Caribbean is the perfect destination. Do you feel as if your relationship is stuck in a rut? Why don’t you spice things up with a romantic all-inclusive Caribbean vacation to the Bahamas or Jamaica?

Work: As with relationships, work can go two different ways too. Are you stressed out at work? If so, use up some of your vacation time and use this as a chance to travel to the Caribbean. Book a stay at an all-inclusive resort where you can sit back and relax or have the adventure of a lifetime. On the other hand, did you just close a big project or get a promotion? Why not celebrate in the Caribbean! Whether you travel by yourself, with your family, with your romantic partner, or with a group of friends, you are sure to have the trip of a lifetime!

Bored with the Beaches Back Home: Whether you are the type of person who just likes to sunbathe on the beach or if you prefer to go snorkeling, scuba diving, or kayaking, you might be bored with the beaches back home. In fact, do you even have any beaches nearby? If you want to spice things up a bit, the Caribbean is the perfect place to do it. Kayaking in the Caribbean waters is much different than going for a run down your local river. Moreover, most all-inclusive Caribbean resorts known as beachfront resorts include these activities as inclusions, meaning they will not cost you extra.

Because You Want To: Who says you need a reason to plan an all-inclusive Caribbean vacation? You don’t! Whether you always dreamed of vacationing in the Bahamas or on the island of Jamaica or if you just happened to catch a special on the Travel Channel, go right ahead and book your trip. There is no time like the present. Remember, this is one trip you will never forget.

So there you have it: five signs you should plan an all-inclusive Caribbean vacation. Speaking of those plans, here are some additional helpful tips for you:

•A passport is required for travel to and from the Caribbean, so order yours in advance.

•Planning ahead is great, but a must if you would like to upgrade to an oceanfront suite.

•Comparing all-inclusive Caribbean resorts in nice, but don’t make your choice solely on price. Opt for a resort with inclusions you will use.

•Get the best travel deals, as well as more accurate information on all-inclusive resorts by visiting the resort websites, as opposed to a third-party travel website.

How to Plan a Skiing Vacation For Your Family

December 4th, 2009

When planning a skiing vacation for your family it can either be fun or a hassle. You will want to follow some simple tips for making your skiing vacation affordable and fun. You will need to take your time and do things right or you could have a very hectic and crazy vacation that you will more than likely not even enjoy. When you take the time to plan the perfect skiing vacation your family will thank you.

The first thing you should work on is your budget. You have to have a budget so that you know what amount of money will be spent on what activity. You will want to decide how much you want to spend on accommodations and activities. Accommodations can vary drastically and the prices of these accommodations can also be very different. You can rent privately owned homes, villas, condos, cabins, and apartments. These accommodations can be rented nightly, weekly or monthly.

You can usually get one of these properties at a very affordable rate. There is no middle man to deal with and the owners are usually very fair about their prices. You can usually get a private owner to negotiate the price if you find something you like but can not afford. There are also many resorts and hotels to choose from regardless of where you choose to take your ski vacation.

The prices on these accommodations can vary drastically. As with any hotel the price will depend on how nice the place is and what amenities they offer. When visiting a ski resort on vacation you may end up paying more than at a regular resort or hotel.

This is because of the convenience of the location. You can simply walk out of the resort and head straight to the lifts to start your skiing. The amount of snow and the height of the mountains will depend on where you go for vacation. Some places have smaller mountains that are easier to ski on while others have very large mountains.

Ski resorts will have different types of runs and you should check with the hotel as to what type they have. Some runs are easier for people learning to ski and children. There are also ski runs that are very advanced and difficult. When trying to decide where to stay on your trip you may want to consider how many people will be going. If you only have a couple of people then a resort may be a good idea.

However if you have a large number of people taking this vacation you may want to consider renting a cabin on the mountain. Resorts may be expensive but they are very luxurious. This is great for a couple on vacation alone. Although a cabin will offer more privacy from the outside world.

You will also need to decide whether you want to buy or rent skis. If this is your first time skiing it is best to rent the skis. You will want to purchase the damage insurance plan that is offered. If you are a long time skier and plan to ski a lot more in the future then it may be time to buy your own pair of skis.

Why Book Europe Vacation Packages?

December 1st, 2009

Europe is chock full of jaw-dropping attractions including historic ruins, majestic castles, and beautiful rolling hillsides.  One of the most difficult aspects of planning a trip to Europe is deciding where to go and what to save for your next trip.  There is literally so much to see and do that it can be incredibly challenging to plan a meaningful vacation.  Booking Europe vacation packages is a great way to enjoy the best that Europe has to offer without the hassle.  You can take a whirlwind tour and visit several of Europe’s major attractions, helping you decide which areas you’d like to visit on your next trip.

Due to the sheer number of things to do in Europe, you will also find it very time consuming to plan a trip there on your own.  Booking Europe vacation packages can save you time because they provide you with a set itinerary.  You don’t have to worry about deciding on which hotels to stay in, which sites to visit, and what transportation to take.

Another benefit of opting for a vacation package is the fact that you won’t have to worry about making the right choices.  It takes time and reading lots of reviews in order to find good hotels, restaurants, etc.  By booking a package tour, you can be sure that you will be staying in reputable hotels.  Another issue of planning a vacation on your own is that you may accidentally book hotels that are located in inconvenient or dangerous areas.  This problem can be avoided if you book a package through a travel agency.

The only downside of booking a package is that you will be traveling with a group of tourists and will thus be less likely to come into close contact with the local cultures and people of the places you visit.  While it isn’t impossible to meet locals and get to know the local culture better on package tours, it will require extra effort on your part.

Whether you want to get to know one European city very well and visit all of its major attractions or you want to go on a multi-city tour, there are a variety of Europe vacation packages available to meet your needs.  Multi-city packages enable you to fly to one city and then fly from another city to go back home.  Some packages may provide a rental car, enabling you to venture out on your own while others may provide transportation via train.  No matter what you envision your Europe vacation being like, you can make sure that your visit to this fascinating continent is a truly unforgettable one by booking a customized package tour.  When you book a package, you can also benefit from the expertise of the travel agent, who can advise you on the best places to eat, visit, etc.

How to Pack Travel Luggage

December 1st, 2009

Going for short trips or vacations can be very refreshing. Work or study, whatever you do, you deserve a break once in a while. And what can be a better way to relax and rest other than travel? Holidaying with loved ones is the most enjoyable and satisfying way of spending your free time. No matter how busy you are throughout the year, it is always good to go for a vacation whenever possible.

One of the main concerns while traveling is the luggage. You have to pack numerous things in order to ensure a hassle free stay away from home. If you miss one essential thing, you can find yourself in trouble in a foreign land. Other than clothes there are toiletries to be taken along with the first aid kit and also the cosmetics. A couple of story books, your ipod and your sunglasses are important too! Because of the range of things you need to pack in your travel bag, it might get a little too puzzling!

Following are a few useful tips on how you should go about packing your travel luggage:

1.Start planning your vacation well ahead of time. If you have managed a leave from work in December, you will do well to get your planning done by October! This is important for more reasons than one.

2.The kind of clothing you take depends largely on the place you are going to. If it’s a tropical country, you won’t need winter wear, but if it’s the opposite, you have to pack in your sweaters and jackets. However, basics of clothing will include t-shirts and jeans, or whatever you are comfortable in. Also take clothes that are easy to wash, don’t need ironing and can easily be dried. A pair of comfortable shoes is something you must pack in your luggage.

3.Heavier items like electronic goods, toiletries and so on should go in to the bottom of the travel bag. It will be easier for you to carry that way.

4.Get your first aid kit and prescription drugs in your hand bag or back-pack. These are the things that need to be accessible, so it’s better to keep them at hand all the time.

5.Start gathering all the essentials at least ten to twelve days before you start your journey. Keep everything arranged systematically before putting them in the bag. This will enable you to check each item before you pack them in.

6.It is wise to check with the rules of the airlines you are traveling with. Check whether the weight of your luggage is within the stipulated amount. You don’t want your things to be thrown away at the airport. Even if the security person does not discard your luggage, you will undoubtedly be in an embarrassing situation. So, be judicious in packing your stuff.

Traveling can be very exciting and fun. Make sure that your luggage is not a hindrance to your easy movement. Pack smartly; make your luggage as light and handy as possible. Choose bags that are easy to carry and don’t forget to take the essentials. Now you’re all set to have a great time traveling!
